Day 3 Continued...

This is the small tourist town in front of Karlstejn Castle.
We are all out to diner at Milli’s boyfriend’s brothers pub. The food is good but neither Milli nor Martin are able to drink a drop because of the Czech Republics super strict no drinking and driving laws. Posted by Picasa

Prague Day 2

Most of our transportation in Prague was by subway. The lines went to all of the locations we were interested in and ran every 5minutes
We ate diner in the shopping mall one night. It really was like any other mall in the United States and the meal was likewise unremarkable.
We all thought that the church in the old town square looked like it should belong to
a wicked witch.
This picture offers more proof that if I do not spend enough money it just turns into jewelery. Posted by Picasa

Prague castle weapons & armor musem

The museum had a very interesting collection of combination weaponry. Sword guns, axe guns, etc..

The were many suits of armor, all very different. We all thought chicken man was very interesting.
We are quite often running into light rain. It seems to spit for a short time almost every day and then stop. Posted by Picasa
We climbed the south tower of Saint Vitus. 280 stairs. The kids are starting to be able to out hike us!!
The views from the tower are really fantastic. Laurel is ready to move to Prague someday. I would like to move somewhere that we could learn french or Spanish. In many ways Prague is too easy and too similar to the United States.

Prague Castle - St. Vitus

Saint Vitus dominates Prague Castle on entry.
An interesting architectural feature is the business men in the lower corners. While the cathedral was started in the 1300's it was not finished until 1929. Apparently, these businessmen thought their part important enough to be placed among the saints.
Impressive, yet it is hard to have any cathedral that compares with St. Peters on Notre Dam.
Though his pictures came out blurry our son's main interest was the crypt and the tomb of St. Wencious(sic). Posted by Picasa

Changing the Guard

We headed to Prague Castle first thing to catch the noon changing of the guard.
The noon ceremony has the most fanfare including a band in the windows.
Our son was able to sit on my shoulders and our daughter was able to work her way to the front of the crowd.
The guards are now changed. Posted by Picasa

Heading towards old town

After breakfast/lunch we headed to old town. In route we stopped at the Astra travel office who helped us figure out what type of sleeper train to get for traveling into Slovakia.
An English speaking ticket agent made booking a ticket so much easier than getting train tickets in China.
From the train station we walked to the powder tower and climbed to the top for a nice view around the city. Prague is very beautiful. 1/2 fairy tail, 1/2 Italy, and 1/2 Paris. Whatever it is it is a full 400% Prague. The clean air, somewhat sane driving and good facilities place it on our short list of countries that we may wish to live in for a year.
Nice architecture in every direction. Posted by Picasa

Grocery shopping in Prague

This is our street. Our apartment is the Astra on the right just past the construction. Laurel did very well booking it. It was recommended by both Milli and Martin who live here. The management is very helpful. We used them as a resource to help us book train tickets to Ostrava and a sleeper train from Bohumin to Kosice.
When we got up in the morning it was actually time for lunch. Not great, but it was right across the street. Devin drank too much beer and had to pee a lot in a city with virtually no public bathrooms.
This huge tower is in the residential neighborhood around our apartment. It makes it very easy to locate our apartment from almost anywhere. The residents all hate it. We have not figured out why it is infested with crawling babies.

Big Americans pizza. Crispy on the outside, soft inside. Humm.. Our reputations proceed us? Posted by Picasa

Arrival in Prague

EasyJet does remind me of Southwest of a few years ago. Very basic services and an enthusiastic young fun staff.
We are all happy to have arrived in Prague. We have gotten a minor glimpse of the city as the plane landed at night. We meet our driver who is very helpful. He says that he is not usually a driver and he seems fairly high level. We suspect that he may have some stake in the Astra apartments where we are staying.

Our apartment is a clean spacious two room apartment with kitchen. We arrive around 11pm. All the grocery stores are closed. We try walking to the local pizzeria that we noticed was open on our way in but it has closed. We walk on in the light rain and find a small basement pub-restaurant that is just perfect for the night. We have some wine, cheese, appetizers, drinks and food for the kids. Hey, I think I like Prague so far! Now it is the morning and it is time to go in search of an ATM and groceries. Posted by Picasa

Flight to London

Since we were delayed by 2 hours our pilots were more than happy to make up the time as best they could in the air. For most of the trip we were trucking along at around 600mph.

We all managed a little sleep in the plane an managed to arrive in London only 1 hour late. We ended up with 4 hours to get from Heathrow to Gatwick and checked in for our flight to EasyJet (the "Southwest" airlines of Europe we are told).

The boarding area for our flight out of Gatwick had some kids activities.
Lindsey slept the bast of us on the flight from London and was still a pretty happy traveler 14 hours in. Posted by Picasa

Off to Prague

Ryland took this picture from our car as we headed out of the mountains in Payson Arizona on our way down to Phoenix and Sky Harbor International airport. While we know that we will see many great places there is no other place exactly like home.

Ryland and Lindsey both wanted to be able to share pictures of our area with people we meet while we travel.
Only one picture was on Lindsey's camera when we got to Prague: This one of Laurel at Flo's Chinese restaurant at the airport. At least Laurel looks happy! Our flight was delayed by two hours so we were killing time as best we could.

And what better way to kill time than big ice cream. Lindsey's cone was literally bigger than her head. I think she managed to eat the toppings off the very top of it before she was full. I was actually a little worried about the connection in London. We were flying British Airways to London and then EasyJet (the southwest of Europe we were told) from London to Prague. Posted by Picasa
